Location: On the Herengracht's "Golden Bend," historically Amsterdam's most prestigious address and part of the UNESCO-listed canal ring, between Utrechtsestraat and Reguliersgracht.
Six 17th- and 18th-century canal houses, including a former private bank, were stitched together in 2014 to create this grand address on the Golden Bend of the Herengracht, a UNESCO-listed stretch of gabled merchant mansions once reserved for the city's wealthiest families. One you arrive, passing the carved 18th-century staircase, the history is apparent in every corner (there are even brass plaques that name the families who once called these rooms home). Outside, the largest private garden in the city offers a shady, walled escape from the bicycle bells and barrel organs. Below ground, the old MeesPierson bank vault has become a clubby cocktail bar, its original safe-deposit boxes still lining the walls. Cycle five minutes to the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, and Vondelpark, or take the short walk to Rembrandtplein and the Bloemenmarkt, and an easy walk or cycle to the Rijksmuseum.
What We Loved: The details here are exquisite, including the beautiful grand central staircase carved by Daniel Marot (who was architect to Louis XIV), and the largest private garden in Amsterdam.
What We Didn’t Love: Remember these were originally 17th-century canal houses, so closet and storage space in several room categories can be on the petite side - something to note if you don’t travel light.
Right For: Couples, architecture and history enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a calm and quiet home base (the Guerlain spa is a major asset for those seeking relaxation.)
Wrong For: If you’re in Amsterdam for the nightlife, this might not be the location for you, as the Golden Bend is a quieter corner of the city.
Best Time to Visit: Late April through September. The walled garden is in bloom and perfect for outdoor dining through summer, and canal terraces peak June–August
