Hotel Bel-Air is pure Los Angeles fantasy. Located in a sprawling canyon estate, where pink stucco bungalows, swan-dotted ponds, and towering palms feel a world away from the city, this beacon of old Hollywood glam opened in 1946. It’s since been reimagined by Alexandra Champalimaud, and its 103 rooms and 45 suites marry Tinseltown lore with serene California cool. Fireplaces, private patios, and garden paths set the tone for discreet luxury, and the iconic oval pool (once a riding ring) and a lush spa add to the sense of escape. Just minutes from Beverly Hills, yet blissfully hidden, Bel-Air isn’t just a hotel, it’s a legend dressed in soft light and quiet luxury.

What We Loved: The magical sense of exclusivity — soaring palms, secret garden paths and intimate cottage-style rooms make this feel like a private estate rather than a hotel. The intuitive service adds to the feeling that you’re staying at the home of your most glittering friend. As Local Foreigner advisor James McLaren says, “Nothing beats strolling the verdant gardens of this property, enjoying breakfast with a cappuccino under the bougainvillea at the Bel-Air restaurant and lighting your cozy fireplace at night. Layer on a very relaxed atmosphere and friendly, personal service it will always be a winner for me.”

What We Didn’t Love: That iconic pool can get busy, especially on the weekend, so you may want to have your Local Foreigner advisor make a reservation for a chair.

Right For: Honeymooners, couples looking to relax, and any other travelers looking for serenity.

Wrong For: Those seeking Hollywood flashbulbs or a livelier scene may want to check into The Beverly Hills Hotel instead.

Best Time to Visit: Spring through early fall (April–October) showcases the gardens in full bloom and often offers weather perfect for outdoor lounging by the pool.

TLF Tip: Don't miss the standout signature bread basket on The Restaurant’s menu featuring house-made selections from the on-property Patisserie - these are LA’s best carbs.
