Far from the Cabo madding crowd, along the glittering Sea of Cortez, the Four Seasons Los Cabos at Costa Palmas brings a new face to Baja California tourism. The 141-room property, splayed across sand dunes fronting the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, is a contemporary feat of modern Mexico. Classic Four Seasons subtlety pairs well with local textiles sourced from Guadalajara and the Baja Peninsula – the open air lobby is a cactus-studded, latern-lit oasis, while rooms are outfitted with woven rugs and indigenous prints. Amenities run the gamut, from six outdoor pools, to five dining venues, to an off-campus adventure team, though the resort’s best feature may be the highly coveted swimmable beach.

What We Loved: The Four Seasons shows off another, quieter side of the Baja Peninsula - and of Four Seasons itself. The location along the Sea of Cortez is more than an hour from the strip of resorts near Cabo San Lucas. The waters here are warm, calm, and perfect for swimming (unlike the beaches to the south), and the vibe is decidedly understated.

What We Didn’t Love: The sceney restaurants and brand partnerships (think Estiatorio Milos and skincare guru Tata Harper) create a bit of a cognitive dissonance for a resort built to be tucked away from it all. While zen, you’re here for the Four Seasons, not for Mexico.

Right For: Families who want a full-service resort with a swimmable beach in the Cabo area; Four Seasons loyalists dipping their toe into Mexican waters.

Wrong For: Travelers who come to Cabo for the scene - the local restaurants and colorful architecture of San Jose del Cabo is a 90-minute drive away.

Best Time to Visit: Festive season and Spring Break are popular with families, but for west coast travelers especially, any time is a good time for an easy jaunt south of the border. Just steer clear during hurricane season, from late August to mid October.

TLF Tip: The picture-perfect spa offers guided meditation, breathwork, and Reiki, for when you need a mental and physical escape (and to help maintain that calm, 4 out of 6 pools on property are adults-only. OM.)
