Collegio alla Querce, Auberge Resorts Collection
Hotel Name: Collegio alla Querce, Auberge Resorts Collection
Number of Rooms: 83 Rooms and Suites
Location: On the northeastern edge of the city of Florence, tucked down a cypress-lined drive overlooking the city
Auberge makes its debut in Italy with Collegio alla Querce, an intimate retreat that combines Tuscan charm with easy access to the cradle of the Renaissance. Set within a beautifully restored 16th-century university, the property boasts sweeping views of vineyards and olive groves; inside, you’ll find original coffered ceilings and vibrant frescoes. Rooms are stylishly appointed, with a blend of the practiced modern elegance Auberge is known for, and rustic touches. The city is a gateway to the wonders of Tuscany, and the hotel is a perfect summation - from one side of the property, Florence is at your feet, and from the other side, it’s all the scenic wonders of the countryside.
What We Loved: Auberge has a lock on beautiful textiles and textures that combine the heritage of the destination with the brand’s California roots. The result is that each of their properties feels soothing, which is a huge plus when returning from a day in busy Firenze.
What We Didn’t Love: While the hotel is only a 40 minute walk (or 15 minute drive) from the Duomo, visitors who want to be in on the action may prefer a more central location within the city.
Right For: Ideal for couples, honeymooners, and anyone looking to unwind in the tranquility of Tuscany, while having easy access to some of Italy's cultural landmarks. Guests who need more space will appreciate the 2 and 3 bedroom suites, or can opt for the whole Palazzo Moderno, which holds 7 guest rooms and its own rooftop plunge pool.
Wrong For: Travelers seeking an urban experience, those who prefer walking to local attractions, or families with young children may find the property less convenient, though the huge pool is great for kids.
Best Time to Visit: Late spring (May-June) and early fall (September-October) offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and vibrant landscapes; if Florence is on your summer itinerary, the breezy out of town location and the pool are assets.
TLF Tip: The space that houses Bar Bertelli was once the headmaster's office, and now serves cocktails and hand-rolled Italian cigars accompanied by bar bites inspired by the distant lands explored in the school's old history texts.
